Many firsts marked the culmination of a most unusual Hexagon Project 2020. We are so proud to share the many creative expressions of our student participants and are most grateful to the teachers who engaged their students during this difficult time. Our 2020 theme of Diversity became increasingly relevant – especially related to issues of racism and equity. As March came and went, we could not ignore the need to add a second theme. As lockdowns occurred throughout the world, we invited students and the public to respond to the theme “Coping with COVID-19” both on Instagram and in remote classrooms.
For the first time, the excellent resources of Artsonia.com became our “virtual gallery.” Over 400 hexagons were submitted from all over the world and can be viewed on Artsonia (click to see them).
Another “first” was our international panel of jurors. Art Educator, Artist and International Hexagon Project Ambassador, Ms. Jada Kadry from Cairo, Egypt paired with Mrs. Marianne Milks from Pennsylvania, who, over ten years has conducted the Project internationally in Nepal, Haiti, and Uganda. Also, Hexagon Project co-founder, Art Educator and now high school Dean of Students at Mountain View School District in Kingsley, PA, George Barbolish, teamed up with Mrs. Shelley Menhennet from Victoria, Australia. Shelley has directed the Hexagon Project at Cambridge Primary School for over 6 years – and also wrote two articles for our Blog about her lock-down experiences “Down Under” — “Returning to School? A Report from Australia” and “Shelley Shares Her Journey from AU.”
Our local team of artist/educators Sarrah Dibble-Cambrun, a 13 year faithful participant, and Michael Sorrentino completed our panel, jurying three age categories: elementary, middle school, and high school.
Also a first, recognition was given to outstanding hexagons in only three thematic categories: Diversity Theme, COVID-19 Theme and any Interdependence Theme. The jurors were directed to choose the three most powerful, effective and creative hexagons that relate to each theme, then to choose three honorable mentions. We deeply appreciate the time and care they took to make these selections. Certificates are being awarded to all recognized hexagons.
